Church Planting in Chemnitz, Germany

Matthias Keller pioneered Hope Chemnitz in 2001. It was a challenge pioneering a house church in Chemnitz because the majority of the city’s population are atheist. This region of Germany was under communist control for 40 years and as a result, people have a mistaken understanding about God or Christianity. Matthias Keller made two attempts of starting a house church in Chemnitz without success. Marcus Rose from Hope Berlin encouraged Matthias to persevere and believe God for a breakthrough. Eventually, God began to add people to the house church, one by one. One of them was Yvonne from Hope Berlin, who moved to Chemnitz to marry Matthias Keller in April 2006. Currently Hope Chemnitz consists of two house churches, both filled with university students. The church has sent out team members to other parts of Germany, and to European cities such as Prague and Rome to support church planting efforts.

Middle Germany Regional Day

On Saturday, there were over 60 people from Hope churches in Middle Germany who gathered for a day of teaching and training by Marcus Rose and Franziska Unger. The churches and leaders included:

  • Hope Plaven (Sebastian & Franziska Unger)
  • Hope Leipzig (Heike & Thomas Rackwitz)
  • Hope Chemnitz (Titus & Anette Lindl)
  • Hope Dresden (Heiko & Diana Muller)
  • Hope Jena (Lars & Susanne Weichhardt) and
  • Hope Nuernberg (Silvana Hoepfner)

Sebastian Unger (Middle Germany Region leader) was leading the praise and worship session. Franziska Unger was teaching on the topic of “Conquerors in Christ”. Marcus Rose spoke on “Church Growth” and imparted visions for 2008. Thank God for six people who got water baptised on Saturday at the public swimming pool. Five people of those people were over 40 years old who wanted to rededicate their lives to Christ.

Campus Evangelism

This week was the first week of university in Chemnitz with many new students. Hope Chemnitz together with other Hope churches in the region had everyday evangelism at university. They started every morning with worship and prayed for outreach programs at the ministry house. There were about 10 team members going out everyday to share with students about God and invite them for Gaming night and Friday night party. God blessed the team with at least 40 new contacts for the week.

GamES Night

On Wednesday night, the church had an outreach event called “Gaming Night”. This event provided a great opportunity for church members to build friendships with the new students on campus. Small groups sat around tables to play cards and board games. It was a fun night and the visitors enjoyed themselves that evening.

Friday Night Party

The church has been praying and inviting students for the party during the whole week of evangelism. The party started at 6 pm with finger food providing refreshment for guests. More and more new students came to the party throughout the night. Over 40 people came to the party, and about 20 of them were visitors. The ministry house served as a great place for a party because it has many rooms. There were many opportunities for us to share the good news of Christ and for building relationships with people at the party. The party ended at midnight and surprisingly there were more people wanted to join the party. The church members had to turn people away at midnight because they had to prepare for Regional Day on Saturday. God is so amazing!
